The air pump and other parts of the aeration system help to maintain the right oxygen level in the water. In general, you don't need the use of fish tank filters if you have an air pump system. It's important that you choose the right air pump for your aquarium. Fortunately, this is not difficult.

In general, a properly aerated aquarium tank will ensure both the PH levels of the water are correct and there is enough oxygen in the water for the fish to breathe. There are various kinds of air pumps -- even some battery-operated air pumps to ensure air keeps on being pumped into the aquarium in the event of a power failure.

If you are providing an aeration system for a small tank, you can use a simple aquarium air pump attached to a airstone with a rubber tube. This system will essentially be blowing the air into the aquarium water which causes motion in the water and provides oxygen for the fish.

Many people complain that air pumps are loud. One thing you can do to mitigate the noise is to ensure the air pump is placed on a large sponge which insulates the noise.
